The innovation of the electronic cigarette is causing quite a stir. It is becoming a way for regular tobacco smokers to try something new that is not as destructive to their health. An electronic cigarette, or an e cigarette, as they are also called, are cylindrical tubes, resembling a tobacco cigarette that contain a glycol liquid that is atomized into a vapor, resembling smoke, that is inhaled and exhaled. This simulates the actions of “smoking” and triggers all of the psychological mannerisms of smoking as well.
The liquid that is contained in the e cigarette, can be flavored with no flavor, to a variety of different flavors from fruity flavors, to chocolate, mint, menthol, peppermint, and even a tobacco flavor. Actual nicotine can be included, and purchased in different strengths, which accounts for so many tobacco smokers becoming interested in the product.
A person who is addicted to tobacco is really addicted to the nicotine in the tobacco cigarette. Nicotine is said to be one of the most addictive substances on earth, and it is very difficult to stop using it. With the electronic cigarette, however, a nicotine strength can be used at the beginning and tapered down as time goes on, until there is not nicotine in the e cigarette.
Certainly by smoking an e cigarette, the smoker does not receive all of the harmful chemicals and tars of the tobacco cigarette, and yet has the means to wean themselves off of the nicotine, in much the same manner as using nicotine patches or nicotine gum to do the same thing.
Cigarettes have a long history of trouble for our health, as they are the author of many terrible diseases, such as cancer and heart disease. Before World War II, there was barely any instance of lung cancer in the United States. If a doctor saw one case of lung cancer in his entire career, it was a rarity.
Then cigarette smoking was the “in thing” during the war, and in a few years, lung cancer began to become more prevalent. Since the 1950’s lung cancer has proven to be a killer. Each year, about 160,000 people die from lung cancer, more than all of the other cancer types put together.
There are over 2,200 different chemicals contained in cigarette smoke, over 200 of which are proven to be carcinogenic. Arsenic and cyanide are contained in cigarette smoke. The tar that is left behind in a person’s lungs has been proven to be carcinogenic and kills the alveoli, which provide the means for the exchange of oxygen into our bodies.
Electronic cigarettes have none of these dangers, yet provide an enjoyable, more flavorful experience, that does not endanger one’s health at all. The only danger would be that of the nicotine, which has been shown to have contributed to heart and blood pressure issues. However that can be totally excluded from the electronic cigarette experience, if the user so chooses.
Inhaling the vapor that emits from the e cigarette is akin to breathing the air on a humid day, and is actually very refreshing. So far, it has proven to be a viable method of getting away from the smoking of tobacco.
It will also be interesting to see what will happen when big tobacco begins to appropriate the brand to their own, as tobacco giant Lolliard has recently purchased Blu Cig, one of the early leading brands of e cigarettes.
If big tobacco can effectively promote a substance that has proven to be a killer all of those years, how much more effectively will they be able to join the marketplace and be a force in the e cigarette market as well?
E cigarettes have zoomed in popularity since the first year they came on the market in 2009, where sales were only 69,000. It is expected that sales from 2014 on will number in the 3 to 7 million range, and at the last academy awards ceremonies, nearly everyone sported at least one kind of electronic cigarette.
What happens next will probably be an explosion of more brands, and unique devices to exploit the experience of e smoking, as people learn more about the product, and it’s seemingly non-threatening use.
